The Great Pumpkin Backstory and Giveaway
Last year I had this idea: Design a Christmas quilt with giant candy canes. The candy canes would be so big they’d cover the entire quilt. I nestled them together and topped them off with a Starlite™ mint.

Prancer’s Peppermints, designed and made by Diane Harris, appeared in Quilty Nov/Dec. 2018
Quilty magazine published them as Prancer’s Peppermints in the Nov/Dec ’18 issue.
Then I thought it might be fun to make a giant pineapple quilt, and that’s how Welcome was born. This design used other pieced pineapples as a springboard for my own interpretation. I wrote free instructions to make this quilt and I hope you’ll help yourself.

The Great Pumpkin, designed and made by Diane Harris, appears in Quiltmaker Sept/Oct ’19
I thought it might be fun to do a great big pumpkin in a similar way. So I designed the quilt above in Electric Quilt design software and submitted it to the titles in Golden, Colorado. Pretty soon they responded. “We’d like to publish your pumpkin quilt, but without the Flying Geese.”
I thought about it for a while and then politely said that without the piecing at the center, it was just a giant pumpkin and I didn’t think that was very interesting.
Before long they relented and let me have my pumpkin just the way I wanted to make it. Find the issue on newsstands now or get a digital version you can download instantly.
A couple of years back I designed Pumpkins and Patches for Quiltmaker. The image above is from EQ7 but it was huge at 77″ x 101″, so the editors wisely decided to pattern it as a throw-size quilt instead.
The striped border is playful but I would prefer a more subdued choice. To each her own, right? You can still get Pumpkins and Patches in digital format, instantly downloadable.
Let’s have a giveaway!
I have a copy of Quilty with Prancer’s Peppermints inside, the Sept/Oct ’19 Quiltmaker with The Great Pumpkin inside, three issues of McCall’s Quick Quilts including my Christmas tree pattern (below), and this very useful Stash ‘n Store cutie-pie from It’s Sew Emma.
Its little compartments hold all your skinny and medium size tools upright for a quick grab when you need them.
The Stash ‘n Store also comes in lime and purple and other delicious colors and is available from Fat Quarter Shop. I love mine!

Twinkling Bright by Diane Harris for McCall’s Quick Quilts Dec/Jan ’18
For your chance to win the giveaway, leave a comment before the day ends on Thursday, August 29, 2019, telling me if we’ve ever met in person and if so, where.
I love learning who visits the Stash Bandit blog. I’ll announce the winner sometime on Friday, August 30. Good luck!
The winner of this giveaway is Wendy in Maine. Thank you for playing along, everyone!
(Please don’t worry if your comment doesn’t immediately show up. In order to avoid spammers, I have to approve comments one by one and I’m usually at my sewing machine, not the computer!)

Hi Diane! We met at your presentation for Cottonwood quilt guild in Elkhorn, Ne. I believe it was 2016 or 2017. At that time I was a quilt pattern tester for 100 Blocks. I even had someone take my photo with you! I love your scrappy ideas……we are kindred souls when it comes to quiltmaking. I hope to come to one of your presentations again.
