Going Scrappy with a Pattern
One of my favorite freelance jobs is with Annie’s Craft Catalog and Quilter’s World magazine. Each month I do a Facebook Live and talk about one of their pattern. I love putting my scrappy spin on things and it’s a great opportunity to be seen by their followers, who number in the hundreds of thousands.

For the July FB Live, I chose the Healing Quilt designed by Lyn Brown. It is perfect for demonstrating how you can take a pattern that’s shown in just a few fabrics and scrap it up into a happy party!
If you enjoy the video, you can help me out by sharing it. Use the “share” button in the upper right corner. I’d appreciate that!
Here are some of the color options I talk about in the video.

You can remove the color by using a smartphone or by using quilt design software such as EQ8 from The Electric Quilt Company. I used EQ8 but in the video you can see that I also used my phone to demonstrate how well that works, too.

This makes a striking design with just two values: light and dark. I am very tempted to make a two color version!

I love this yellow version but I don’t have a large piece of yellow for the background and border. I really love using what I already own, so I keep playing around.

I usually love red and teal together but this one didn’t trip my trigger. I wanted more POW!

I decided that the version above was okay except for the light gray centers. They needed to be beefed up.

I changed the centers to be dark and I now I like it a lot but I’m not finished playing yet.

I decided I wanted those pointy shapes to each be from one fabric. This means deliberate sewing but it’s easily done, which I show on the video. I’d planned to just make my blocks for the Live but I like it so much that I’m going to make the whole quilt. Stay tuned.

You are a big reason why I recently subscribed to Quilter’s World. I miss QNM, and I dropped the other mags because I don’t need more copies of the same 10 patterns that I can draw up myself from the pictures. (I really hate when the directions are wasteful of fabric and time or inaccurate!)

Hi Bridget, that is really good to hear! I think Quilter’s World is very up-and-coming these days and I like what they’re doing. I’m glad you feel the same. I miss QNM too, it was a sad day when they closed it down. I’ll have a fun quilt design in the spring issue of QW. I can’t wait for you to see it!
